This summer, Colorado State University graduate student Sarah Gumson spent a two weeks in Kyiv, Ukraine, with the goal of assisting those with disabilities. Gumson is currently enrolled in a part-time distance program at CSU working on her Master of Social Work.
The Legacies Project in the CSU’s College of Health and Human Sciences was launched in 2012 as a way to chronicle the personal and professional histories of those who helped shape the college. This year, three new honorees were unveiled.
On paper, School of Social Work alumnus and combat veteran Alastair Johnson's career change seems to be an about face: from British Army to child welfare case work. But for Johnson, who completed his M.S.W. in 2014, it was more of a gradual and logical evolution.
“Ben was a real social worker,” Georgia Granger said remembering her husband. “He loved the students; he wanted to teach them all he could. He wanted them to look at the people, see what they are really like and help them with whatever needs they had.”
In a stadium full of fellow graduate students wearing mortarboard caps and gowns signifying academic excellence, two doctoral students in the School of Social Work, Annie Keeney and Shannon Harrison, celebrated graduation endings and new beginnings on May 12 in Moby Arena.

The annual Celebrate Undergraduate Research and Creativity (CURC), showcase allows undergraduate students from a range of University colleges and their corresponding majors to highlight their achievements in research and creativity with the support of faculty mentors. This year, the College of Health and Human Sciences had students from interior design, nutrition and food science, human development and family studies, social work and health and exercise science submit their research and creative projects.
