Flu shot clinics offered on campus for students, employees

New CSU Health and Medical Center

Flu season has officially begun. To keep the campus community healthy, experts recommend that people be vaccinated against influenza as soon as possible, ideally by the end of October. The flu shot is the single best way to prevent, shorten or reduce the severity of the flu.

Flu shots are available for Colorado State University students, faculty and staff on campus. The CSU Health Network is providing flu and COVID shot appointments for students, and Human Resources is hosting flu shot clinics in October and November for faculty and staff.

“Flu shots are strongly recommended for most college students,” said Dr. Kathlene Waller, director of medical clinical services at the CSU Health Network. “Students are at high risk of being exposed to influenza, as they live and study in communal settings such as residence halls and classrooms.”

Flu shots not only protect the person who receives the vaccine but also others around them, some of whom may be at high risk for complications and/or unable to get vaccinated for health reasons.

Flu/COVID shots for CSU students

Students can get their flu and COVID shots by scheduling an appointment through the CSU Health Network. Flu shots are available Monday–Friday during regular operating hours at the Health and Medical Center. The CSU Health Network is only offering COVID shots on Fridays. Students may get a flu vaccine at the same time as a COVID vaccine. Those who would like both immunizations should mention this when making an appointment.

  • Online scheduling for flu shots is offered through the CSU Student Health Portal at health.colostate.edu.
  • COVID shots are available on Fridays. The CSU Health Network is currently offering the updated Moderna vaccine. Call (970) 491-7121 for an appointment. No walk-ins.

For students, flu and COVID shots are typically a covered benefit at in-network providers, meaning there is no additional out-of-pocket cost under most health insurance plans, including the CSU-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan. Students should check with their health plan in advance if they have questions about cost.

Faculty, admin pro and non-classified staff

For faculty, administrative professional and non-classified staff, CSU Human Resources is hosting three flu shot clinics in the Lory Student Center on main campus and one clinic in the Diagnostic Medicine Center on south campus.

The flu shot clinics are free for employees and their dependents enrolled in a CSU Anthem medical plan. For those not enrolled in an Anthem plan, the cost of the flu shot is $39 for those under age 65.

State classified staff

For state classified staff, CSU Human Resources is hosting one flu shot clinic in Lory Student Center on main campus and one clinic in the Diagnostic Medicine Center on south campus.

The free on-campus clinic is for employees and their dependents enrolled in a State of Colorado medical plan.

“Getting a flu shot is a small but important step towards keeping our community healthy and safe,” Chief Total Rewards Officer Teri Suhr said. “If employees are unable to attend the on-campus clinics, they can still get their flu shot from a physician in-network pharmacy, and it will still be covered by insurance.”

Flu prevention

In addition to the flu shot, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the following for the best prevention against the flu: cleaning shared surfaces, avoiding close contact with those who are sick, thoroughly washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, and avoiding touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
