The public is advised to avoid the area of Center Avenue on campus between Lake and Prospect, and south of Prospect Road, throughout the rest of the month and February. Lanes on Center Avenue and Prospect Road will be closed starting Monday, Jan. 18, for work related to the underpass being built to provide pedestrians, bikes and longboards with a safe way to cross Prospect to get to and from campus. Work will continue through February. In January, two-way traffic will be allowed, as controlled by traffic flaggers, on both Prospect and Center with the lane impacts. Starting on Feb. 2, the southbound lane of Center Avenue from campus (at Prospect) will be completed closed to all vehicle, bike and pedestrian traffic. This closure is anticipated through February. The closures may be extended if weather conditions increase the time needed to complete work in the area.

A road linking Lake and Pitkin opened this week, giving vehicles a route from the west end of campus south into the city. The road is one-way south for vehicles, and two-way access for bikes, pedestrians and emergency vehicles.

Work is beginning on an underpass for pedestrians, bikes and longboarders at the intersection of Prospect and Center. The underpass will provide safe passage under Prospect and serve as a gateway onto campus, connecting Aggie Village, the south campus and horticulture facilities to main campus. The underpass features a wide passageway, providing ample space for multiple modes of transportation, and will be well lit.

Activity at several construction zones on campus is picking up this fall, and university planners are strongly recommending that students, faculty, staff and visitors who ride their bikes to and through campus avoid construction-traffic heavy areas. In particular, construction traffic is expected to increase starting today, October 12, along the West Pitkin Street and East Drive corridors at the Chemistry and Biology Building sites on the east side of campus, and on West Lake Street south of the stadium construction site on the west side of campus. This map shows recommended routes onto campus and through campus to avoid areas with heavy traffic. Bike riders are reminded that they must obey all traffic signals and right-of-ways, just as they would if driving a vehicle, including stopping at stop signs and obeying directions from traffic flaggers. October 1 will mark the first day of construction on the university’s new Biology building, when the construction fence officially encloses the construction site and parking in lot #547 closes.

• Expect delays on nearby Lake Street, Pitkin Street and East Drive, while utility work for the two buildings is completed. Over the next several weeks to months, traffic may be reduced to one lane, monitored by flaggers.
• All traffic, but particularly bikes and pedestrians are encourage to avoid the intersections of Lake and East, and Lake and Pitkin. They also should avoid traveling west on Piktin Street directly north of the construction site (west of East Drive) because of heavy construction traffic to and from the site.
• Due to increased traffic from construction equipment, it is especially important for individuals who are riding bikes to obey all traffic laws, just as they would if driving a vehicle, including stopping at stop signs, yielding right of way, and following flagger directions.
• People who have routinely parked in lot #547 should consider parking in the new lot on Research Drive. More information about parking availability.

The Biology building, and its companion Chemistry building, slated to be built next-door with a start date this winter, will help complete a science mall on campus, including existing buildings Yates Hall, Microbiology, Anatomy-Zoology, Environmental Health, Pathology. Some non-CSU parking spaces will be removed and pedestrian and bike routes will be reconfigured along the north side of Lake Street  between Whitcomb Street and Center Avenue starting Saturday, Aug. 8. The street will be closed all day Satruday for repainting, and will reopen by Monday, Aug. 10. The reconfiguration will impact about 25 city parking spaces, which are not maintained by the university or under university parking requirements. These spaces are directly north of the Aggie Village North construction site. Bike and pedestrian routes also will be reconfigured to the north side of Lake Street. These changes are to enhance bike and pedestrian safety.

A small section of East Drive will be closed from Lake Street north to the Pathology Building until the end of the day Wednesday, August 5. Local access to buildings, including Pathology and the Painter Center, is open from the north on East Drive, but is not accessible from the south. East and west traffic on Lake Street remains open, but reduced to one lane with flaggers. Expect delays, and consider using alternate routes. This closure allows the city to work on replacing a sewer line at the intersection. Signs noting detour routes will be posted.
