Colorado State University was recently renewed as a Bike Friendly University at the Platinum level, one of only nine colleges and universities in the country receiving this prestigious designation.

The Bicycle Friendly University program recognizes institutions of higher education for promoting and providing a more bikeable campus for students, staff and visitors.

In honor of Earth Day on April 22, here are 22 things that help make CSU a Platinum Bike Friendly University, as they relate specifically to Bike Programming and Culture on campus.

1. The Spoke/ Mobile Spoke

A student-run bike shop, The Spoke, is located in the Pavilion in Laurel Village. Maintenance is free if the customer does the work themselves under the guidance of a student technician. The Mobile Spoke bike trailer pops up around campus, intercepting bicyclists with evident bike issues.

2. Move-in bike tours

During move-in week each year, there are tours that orient new students to the campus, imparting important bike safety information.

3. Bike to Work Day

CSU hosts a BTWD breakfast station on campus, tying into the city-sponsored summer and winter events.

4. Bike to Breakfast

CSU hosts Bike to Breakfast events throughout September to intercept students and employees on their way into campus. Free helmets, bike repair, coffee and breakfast burritos are provided.

5. Campus Bicycle Advisory Committee

Students, faculty and staff can join the Campus Bicycle Advisory Committee to help improve bicycling on campus. The committee meets on the second Thursday of each month.

6. Learn To Ride classes

Learn to Ride classes are offered for the CSU community.

7. Get Back on the Bike

An annual program for those CSU employees seeking to start bicycling again

8. Rambassadors

CSU hires six to eight Rambassadors annually to provide education and encouragement directly at trails, intersections, and dismount zones across campus.

9. New employee travel training

New employees are contacted by CSU Parking and Transportation Services staff to discuss transportation options, safe routes to work, and programming to support commuters.

10. Rent.colostate.edu

A mobile-friendly website for students to determine the true cost of commuting and the cost of living and commuting by bicycle versus a car to CSU.

11. Bike Lane Safety Campaign

Creating awareness of stopping/standing in bike lanes on campus, educating people about where to load/unload and pick-up/drop-off passengers instead of using bike lanes.

12. E-cargo bikes for Housing & Dining Services

CSU HDS purchased two e-cargo trikes and received a grant from the Colorado Energy Office for three more. These replace gas-powered vehicles for some maintenance and operations for the department.

13. Special event parking

CSU provides special event parking and valet services for events flagged as having large attendance and situated away from available bike parking.

14. League cycling instructor training/scholarships

CSU provides scholarships for League Cycling Instructor training to employees who serve on the CBAC and are dedicated to promoting cycling at CSU.

15. #Rams Ride Right

A face-to-face encouragement strategy that serves to reinforce positive bicycling early in the academic year.  Volunteers staff intersections (with the assistance of CSU PD) and reward stopping, signaling, and dismounting with bike-related prizes.

16. CSU Moves

An online transportation safety training, available to students before coming to campus. The training leads the student through six educational units.

17. Free U-locks for students

CSU PD purchased locks for all students who register their bike or show an existing registration. Funding was provided by the Alternative Transportation Fee Advisory Board.

18. Community rides

Monthly group lunch-time rides in the summer for CSU employees and community members with a specific emphasis on skill-building for female bicyclists.

19. We Ride

Held the Saturday before classes start each year, this event provides bike registrations, and free items to students while they learn about CSU’s bike culture and programming.

20. Choose Your Ride; Shift Your Ride

A second round of e-bikes was awarded to income-qualified community members, with 27 CSU employees receiving e-bikes or Spin memberships through the program.

21. E-bikes for essential workers

19 CSU employees received grant-funded e-bikes, safety gear, and training.

22. Colorado Safety Stop Education

CSU is educating our community about this new law that allows Colorado bicyclists to treat stop signs as yield signs and red traffic lights as stop signs.
