Volunteers needed for Move-In Week

As on-campus residents return to campus next week, Move-In Week will result in a flurry of activity over several busy days. To help this process go smoothly, volunteers are needed in a number of roles throughout campus.

Residence hall move in happens primarily over three days, Aug. 14-16, during which a bulk of the more than 5,000 students move into the halls. Residents have registered for a 60-minunte arrival time slot, during which they can go through the check-in process and unload their vehicles. This results in staggered arrival times and fewer campus traffic jams.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to greet our students and welcome them to campus just as they’re arriving,” said Christie Mathews, the director of projects and outreach for Housing & Dining Services, who is helping to organize the volunteer effort. She also is picking up several shifts herself. Mathews is serving lunches and dinners throughout the week, and she said that she is hoping to do so at all four major dining centers.

There are still hundreds of volunteer slots left for Move-In Week in many different areas, and more for the coming weeks in August:

  • Dining Centers: Volunteers will work in the campus dining centers to serve meals to students and their families at lunch and dinner. Dining is looking for volunteers to help through the first few weeks of classes as they continue to hire student staff at the start of the semester.
  • RamCard Office: The office has asked for help from volunteers to get RamCard student IDs printed and distributed over the course of the week.
  • Cardboard Corrals: Volunteers at these outdoor waste sorting stations support our sustainability efforts by helping students and family members sort cardboard, Styrofoam, and thin-film plastic.
  • Traffic and Parking: Volunteers direct students and families, explaining where to park for 30-minute unloading and giving information about longer-term parking options. They also help to keep traffic moving.
  • Building Services: Assistance with elevator operations and directions, and general assistance inside the residence halls.

“Many campus partners have been supporting our students on their journey to CSU,” Mathews said. “This volunteer opportunity provides a chance for them to meet students in person for the first time and provide that positive first connection.”

As in years past, members of CSU’s sororities/fraternities, as well as students from athletics have volunteered to help students and parents/families move in. Blanche Hughes, vice president for student affairs, and staff will be circulating through campus with popsicles, greeting students and their families.
