Organizers said monetary and food donations have been coming in since the campaign started on Sept. 18. However, they’re still looking for a big push to reach their target.

The annual C.A.N.S. Around The Oval collection celebration is set for Oct. 18, and organizers are asking the Colorado State University community to show their support before the big day.

Organizers of the drive to collect nonperishable food and raise money for the Food Bank for Larimer County said they are aiming to raise $60,000 and 15,000 pounds of food.

Basic Needs Program Coordinator Kathryn Conrad, who is part of CSU’s Student Leadership, Involvement, and Community Engagement (SLiCE) office, explained that they’ve seen momentum in monetary and food donations since the campaign started on Sept. 18. However, they’re still looking for a big push to reach their target.

“Right now, we have 34 registered teams and counting for this year’s drive,” she said. “We are pushing ahead of where we were last year on our food poundage goal, but falling slightly behind where we were last year on our monetary donations.”

The fun and interactive CANstruction activity is back at the C.A.N.S. Around The Oval collection event this year. Organizers said the CANstruction theme will be “iCANic Architecture.”

As in previous years, collection day on the Oval will include remarks from CSU leadership as well as the weighing and loading of donated food items into trucks headed to the Food Bank for Larimer County.

Collection day is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 18, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the remarks from leadership starting at 10 a.m.

This year also marks the return of the popular CANstruction, in which teams create sculptures out of cans.

“We’re excited to reintroduce CANstruction to our C.A.N.S. Around The Oval festivities this year,” Conrad said. “The 2023 CANstruction theme will be ‘iCANic Architecture,’ and registered C.A.N.S. teams will be able to sign up to participate.”

CANstructing will run from 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Oct. 18, with judging commencing shortly after, with a decision by 2 p.m. To register an existing C.A.N.S. team to participate in  CANstruction click here.
