Colorado State University’s annual drive — C.A.N.S. Around The Oval — to collect nonperishable food and raise money for the Food Bank for Larimer County is set to start on Monday, Sept. 18.

Organizers of the 37-year-old tradition are aiming to raise $60,000 and 15,000 pounds of food, with the C.A.N.S. Around The Oval celebration set for Wednesday, Oct. 18.

Basic Needs Program Coordinator Kathryn Conrad, who is part of CSU’s Student Leadership, Involvement, and Community Engagement (SLiCE) office, said this year’s C.A.N.S. looks to continue the demonstrated power of the CSU and Fort Collins community.

“We can’t wait for the 37th year of C.A.N.S. on campus,” Conrad said. “C.A.N.S. is such a valuable event in our community because in addition to fighting food insecurity and stigma, this is a unique yearly opportunity to unite the Fort Collins community with our CSU community. We’re hoping for a lot of participants from all over the city and university this year. Because food insecurity is a community issue, it can only be solved with a community-based approach, and we’re excited for C.A.N.S. to continue to be one of many budding local solutions.”

Last year, it came down to the wire, but the annual drive reached its $60,000 fundraising goal and also collected 17,854 pounds of food.

C.A.N.S. — which stands for “cash and nutritious staples” — is one of the largest fund and food drives in Northern Colorado. The annual fall staple at CSU includes a competition in which colleges, departments, divisions and other groups can compete to raise the most funds and give the most food.

The winners will be published on the C.A.N.S. Around The Oval website as well as SOURCE.
