CSU Libraries hosting 6 workshops to celebrate open scholarship

Morgan Library

At the heart of open scholarship is the belief that information and knowledge should be free and publicly available. Open scholarship is gaining momentum as funders, journals and research communities increasingly advocate for its adoption.

To celebrate International Open Access Week and Colorado State University’s commitment to open scholarship, the CSU Libraries are hosting events in October to foster dialogue about open scholarship in our community. The Libraries is a strong supporter of open scholarship and provides resources and services to enhance scholars’ work and impact.

Most workshops are online and require registration.

Navigating Public Access to Research: Understanding the Impact of the Nelson Memo

Thursday, Oct. 5, 10-11 a.m.

Register for Navigating Public Access to Research

In 2022, the Nelson Memo from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy issued new guidance mandating that taxpayer-funded research be immediately available for the public to access free of charge. This memo marks a significant step toward enhancing public access to federally-funded research. This workshop is designed to help researchers understand the implications of the memo and how it affects their work, publications and collaboration with the broader community.

Write a Systematic Review Protocol for Transparency and Reproducibility

Wednesday, Oct. 11, noon-12:50 p.m.

Register for Write a Systematic Review Protocol

Publishers increasingly expect that a protocol (or research plan) for a systematic review will be written and registered publicly before the search results are screened as a core practice of transparent, reproducible and rigorous research. Come learn about the protocol writing process, get access to templates and tools to help you through it, and see a demonstration of the registration process on the Open Science Framework (OSF) platform.

Open-Source GIS Solutions

Thursday, Oct. 12, 10-11 a.m.

Register for Open-Source GIS Solutions

Have you ever wondered what GIS is and how it can be incorporated into your research using open-source tools and public data? If so, this workshop is for you. We’ll explore different open-source options for accessing GIS data, working with it and sharing your results openly with visualizations. From historic hand-drawn maps and measurements, to modern day satellite imagery and sensors, these data, and the tools to work with them openly, are available to help explain our world.

Open Educational Resources

Wednesday, Oct. 18, 10-11 a.m.

Register for Open Educational Resources

Open educational resources are growing more popular at CSU, thanks to initiatives like state grants to lower textbook costs and the Open Educator Award, which provide financial support and recognition for instructors striving to lower the cost of textbooks for students.

Open educational resources can help alleviate the financial burden of instructional materials for students and provide faculty with content that can be customized for their course. These resources are used by many faculty across the country and are licensed to be freely used, edited, and distributed.

Embracing Openness: Open Data and Open Access for Research and Innovation

Thursday, Oct. 19, 10-11 a.m.

Register for Embracing Openness

Engaging in open research practices such as sharing data, methodologies and findings has become increasingly essential in today’s research landscape. Research funders, journals and scientific communities now place higher expectations on transparency and reproducibility of research results. As the open scholarship movement gains momentum, researchers may encounter challenges navigating the intricacies of open data practices and open access publishing.

To address these challenges, this interactive session is aimed at helping researchers understand the benefits of open data and open access in advancing research and fostering innovation.
