Time management workshop for CSU students

The Institute for Learning and Teaching (TILT) at CSU is offering a time management workshop for students at 4 p.m. Sept. 8 in TILT 221. The workshop is free and registration is not required.

Time Management for Busy Students, taught by Darrie Burrage, associate director of learning programs for TILT and a CSU graduate, is 50 minutes. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

“Time management is a workshop that applies not only to your academic life, but your social life, your professional life and your extracurricular life,” Burrage said. “Knowing how to prioritize and schedule your time in such ways that you are making appropriate space for all your different commitments is something that transcends the walls of the classroom.”

Burrage explained time management is not only about meeting all the commitments students have, but it also involves “making space to breathe a little bit, to take naps, to eat, to take showers, to have fun.”

The workshop is geared toward students who are busy or finding themselves addressing new challenges regarding their schedule. It is also for students who are new at CSU and have a lot going on as they transition into college.

This workshop will be offered again at 5 p.m. Sept. 9 and 6 p.m. Sept. 11.

Top 5 time management tips

  • Think in both “macro” and “micro” ways. Plan your commitments in terms of your day to day, but also week by week, and in terms of the semester.
  • Avoid marathon study sessions. Study for one‐hour blocks, with breaks between to get up, stretch, or give your brain a rest.
  • Schedule in study breaks to check Facebook, email, talk on the phone, text, etc.
  • Try starting your sessions with more difficult tasks, while your mind is “fresh.”
  • Use both written and online methods for time management. Written methods can be sticky notes or a weekly planner. Online methods can be reminder apps, calendar apps, notepad apps, computer reminders and online calendars.

Other workshops

TILT constantly offers workshops to improve academic and study skills. Some examples include Test Anxiety, Memory and Concentration, Taking Great Notes, and Final Exam Prep.

“Our workshops are founded on the belief that students need extra skills and competencies to achieve academic success,” said Burrage.
