Native American Heritage Month to feature in-depth conversations and culinary experiences

Native American Heritage Month officially kicked off in October with the annual AISES Powwow. More events are scheduled throughout November.

Native American Heritage Month at Colorado State University will include in-depth cultural talks as well as culinary experiences.

The Native American Culture Center is celebrating the month of November with a variety of events, including lectures from visiting professors on research as well as educational experiences.

Native American Heritage Month follows the annual AISES Powwow in October, which attracted hundreds of visitors to CSU on Oct. 21 to start the celebration. Native American Heritage kicks into full swing on Nov. 2 at the Native American Cultural Center for a Queer Connections event in which guests will share Indigiqueer experiences. The event is in conjunction with CSU’s Pride Resource Center.

Also during the month, two professors from neighboring universities will visit CSU: Greg Cajete, professor at the University of New Mexico, will discuss the potential of how Indigenous wisdom can enrich academic research on Nov. 6; and Jameson Lopez, assistant professor at the University of Arizona, will look at what it means to be a successful Indigenous college student.

Ty Smith, director of the Native American Cultural Center, explained that the month is an opportunity for the university community to come together and celebrate Native cultures and traditions. Smith noted that the Indigenous Kitchen on Nov. 9 is a great opportunity to experience Native American cuisine.

“Food is an important part of Native culture,” Smith said. “It recognizes the time of season — just wrapping up the harvest for the year. Many celebrations are embedded in Native culture to celebrate the harvest, and food is an opportunity that brings us all together.”
