In memory: Cecilia Ann Martin

Dr. Cecilia Ann Martin, 82, of Greeley, died peacefully after a short illness in Greeley on December 5. Her last thoughts were of those dear to her heart. Her ashes will be placed next to her parents in Ft. Worth, Texas.

As a friend, colleague, and teacher, Cecilia is remembered as a person of genuine warmth and caring, touching the lives of those who knew and worked with her. With a strong sense of integrity, she was committed to making differences in others lives.

Beginning her career in Texas, she became a leader in the field of physical education. As the Fort Worth public school system Director of Health and Physical Education, Cecilia pioneered the implementation of elementary physical education curricula taught by certified teachers in 133 schools. Throughout her life she was an ardent supporter and advocate for girl’s and women’s athletic programs.

After completing her doctorate in educational administration at the University of Northern Colorado in 1974, she took a position at Colorado State University in the Department of Physical Education. As a faculty member and the department head until her retirement, she was instrumental in transitioning CSU’s physical education program to the Department of Exercise and Sports Science, adding the sports medicine and health promotion academic tracks. She helped create new departmental learning spaces and established the CSU Adult Fitness Program. Through diligence, integrity, commitment, and good humor, Cecilia gained respect campus-wide among students, faculty, staff, and administrators.

Retirement in 1996 brought time with friends (many she considered her family of choice) and her beloved dogs. She traveled and gave service to others. As a 15-year volunteer, she provided support to patients, their families, and nurses at Greeley hospital and surgery centers.

A celebration of Cecilia’s life will be held from 3-5 p.m.  at the Eaton Country Club, 37661 Co. Rd. 39, Eaton, CO, on Saturday, Jan. 7. Contributions may be made in Cecilia’s memory to Pathways Hospice, Paws and People, or a charity of choice in care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 702 13th St., Greeley, CO, 80631.
