LGBTQIA+ History Month celebrates 25 years of Pride Resource Center

CSU Pride Flag

In addition to more than a dozen events, this year’s LGBTQIA+ History Month celebration at Colorado State University also commemorates the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Pride Resource Center.

Part of the Student Diversity Programs and Services unit within the Office of Inclusive Excellence at CSU, the Pride Resource Center organizes LGBTQIA+ History Month as well as provides programs and services to support the retention of LGBTQ+ students at CSU and help them thrive.

As part of the celebration, the Pride Resource Center will be hosting a session on Oct. 24  at the Symposium for Inclusive Excellence, looking back at its history as well as the queer and trans movement at CSU, discussing the current political realities for LGBTQIA+ students and employees from a national and local context. The session also will offer tangible, actionable resources for participants to help create a campus climate where all LGBTQIA+ people can thrive.

Also for the 25th anniversary, the Pride Resource Center will host a Legacy of Leaders event on Oct. 18. The gathering will include a dinner and the premiere of a short documentary on the Pride Resource Center’s impact at CSU. A panel discussion with previous leaders of the Pride Resource Center will follow the screening.

Additionally, LGBTQIA+ History Month will feature annual traditions such as Coming into Queerness Day — also known as National Coming Out Day — on Oct. 14 on the Lory Student Center Plaza.

The monthlong festivities start on Oct. 4 with a discussion in the Lory Student Center on LGBTQIA+ history. The talk is part of the Queer Connections discussion series, which features talks and interactive activities throughout the month.

National speakers

The Pride Resource Center is partnering with El Centro — which serves CSU’s Latinx/é, Afro-Latinx/é, Chicanx/é and Hispanic community — on Oct. 12 for the annual Borderlands Speaker Series. The talk will feature Cleopatra Tatabele, an activist, educator and organizer grounded in their Black, Indigenous and Latinx/é ancestry.

Additionally, LGBTQIA+ History Month will help host a transgender policy panel at the Symposium for Inclusive Excellence on Oct. 25, featuring Montana State Rep. Zooey Zephyr, who made national headlines when she was barred from the House floor for her remarks on transgender issues. She will be joined by journalist and transgender rights activist Erin Reed. The discussion will be moderated by Pride Center Director Maggie Hendrickson.
