Julie Breidenstein had been accepted into CSU’s in-person Master of Social Work program when the COVID pandemic hit. During this uncertain time, she was nervous about quitting her job and switched to the CSU Online distance program so she could continue to work while earning her graduate degree.

Breidenstein said the three-year timeline while juggling multiple priorities was challenging and she is relieved to be done, but she’s grateful that she chose online education because it allowed her to build her life in other ways while obtaining her degree.

“The online distance learning program makes getting an MSW more accessible to people who might not normally be able to do it because it is geared toward working professionals,” Breidenstein said.

Being a distance learner didn’t mean she was on her own. Breidenstein regularly participated in engagement opportunities offered through the online program.

“It was so helpful to connect with other students going through the same experience of juggling work, internship, school and personal life,” she said.

Mindy Van Kalsbeek, one of Breidenstein’s instructors, said Breidenstein enhanced group dynamics and deepened collective learning experiences with her critical thinking and honest reflections on challenging topics.

“Julie’s dedication to her learning has been evident, and we are honored for her to join us as a valued colleague in the social work profession,” Van Kalsbeek said.

As Breidenstein interviews for therapist positions, she said that she feels she has found her calling in social work.

“I knew this degree was going to lead me to a place where I could make a difference and be fulfilled in the work that I do,” Breidenstein said.
