How to navigate Move-In Week at Colorado State University

Students Moving In

More than 5,000 students are expected to move into residence halls at CSU for the start of the fall semester.

In the next few days, the summer quiet on the Colorado State University campus will be replaced with the sound of vehicles unloading and the chatter of excited students.

Housing & Dining Services plans to welcome more than 5,000 students to its residence halls over the next week for the start of the fall semester. Monday, Aug 14, is expected to be the busiest day, with 2,440 residents registered for an arrival time slot. Tuesday is the second busiest, and Wednesday is the third.

Much has changed since the years of pandemic-related disruptions, and this year’s move-in reservation numbers are a sign that move-in systems are working. Since the years of pandemic restrictions, HDS has implemented a reservation system that helps keep the flow of traffic and crowds in the halls running smoothly throughout the week.

“Almost 90% of residence hall students have reserved their spot for move in,” said John Malsam, associate director of University Housing.

Students now use a reservation system created by CSU Housing & Dining Services. When they arrive, students and supporters will be greeted by friendly staff members and helpful volunteers who help them carry their belongings to their rooms, recycle at cardboard corrals, and find parking for loading and unloading. Volunteers from Fraternity & Sorority Life, as well as Athletics, will be assisting with unloading and moving belongings into apartments and residence halls. Students will get their room keys and complete paperwork at their hall’s check-in location. Students should expect this process to take about an hour, depending on the crowds.

Westfall Hall renovations are complete, bringing about 500-bed spaces back online.

Westfall Hall’s renovation project is complete, adding to CSU’s residence hall inventory.

“We are excited to welcome students back to campus with 500 additional beds at the newly renovated Westfall Hall,” said Malsam. “We completed a space audit this year and were able to identify and prepare about 120 more spaces within our existing facilities to accommodate the growing need for on-campus housing, and we are confident our current residential facilities are equipped to meet the anticipated needs of new and returning students living on campus.”

Staff and faculty are encouraged to leave their vehicles at home if possible during Move-In Week and pay close attention to signage and volunteers to avoid taking loading/unloading spaces or obstructing traffic flow on campus. Driving and check-in instructions specific to each hall/apartment were emailed to all incoming students prior to Move-In Week with important items to keep in mind next week.

Driving directions have been provided to all new incoming students prior to arrival as well as a link to CSU’s interactive Move In Map .

Students will be participating in Ram Welcome after they have moved in.

Dining during Move-In Week

As students meet their new roommates and get to know their new surroundings, there will also be an opportunity to get familiar with the various dining options on campus.

In keeping with last year, parents and legal guardians can join their students for free meals Monday to Wednesday, Aug. 14-16. Each student who uses a meal swipe during those three days is provided two free meals for any meal period.

Commuting to campus during Move-In Week

Keep this info in mind for your commute into campus during Move-In Week.

  • Staff should not park in temporary express unloading zones reserved for residents moving in. Unauthorized vehicles, or vehicles left in unloading zones for longer than 30 minutes, are subject to towing to the Moby lot.
  • Most hall residents will arrive Monday, Aug. 14 to Wednesday, Aug. 16. For those three days, consider using alternative transportation to get to and from campus. We anticipate Monday to be the busiest of the three Move In days, especially near Braiden and Laurel Village Piñon Halls. Bus, bike, scooter, walking, and carpooling are all great options if you are able to make them work for you. For more info on alternatives to driving alone, visit CSU Parking and Transportation Services website at colostate.edu/employee.
  • Cyclists should be aware of Move-In Week bike detour routes, mainly affecting Plum and Pitkin streets, as some of the bike lanes in these areas become temporary unloading zones for residents moving in between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Orange detour signs will be posted along the detour routes for cyclists to follow.
  • If you do bring a vehicle, be prepared for heavier-than-usual traffic near the residence halls and apartments. Consider parking farther from residential buildings so that you avoid congestion and new students and families have more access to those lots.
