Members of the CSU community can now apply for 2023-24 funding toward sustainability projects through the CSU Sustainability Fund, and an additional $75,000 is available for departments willing to retire underutilized and inefficient internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles or purchase an electric vehicle.

Sponsored by the President’s Sustainability Commission, the Sustainability Fund is in its fourth year of supporting sustainability initiatives around the University, and $25,000 is available for one-time requests of up to $10,000 each.

The fund was created to support grassroots sustainability initiatives at CSU, increasing the range and depth of sustainability on campus. By providing a funding mechanism available to students, staff and faculty, the goal of the fund is to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, spark innovative ideas and encourage participation in sustainability across campus.

Applications are open until Oct. 27. Information sessions about the fund will be held at the following dates/times:

  • Thursday, Sept. 14, noon to 1 p.m. via Teams.
  • Monday, Sept. 18, noon to 1 p.m. via Teams.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 27, noon to 1 p.m. via Teams.

EV incentive program

A new pilot program being offered by the President’s Sustainability Commission is the Electric Vehicle and Vehicle Retirement Incentive Grant Program, which awards grants toward the purchase of EVs and the retirement of  ICE vehicles. The program is intended to reduce vehicle greenhouse gas emissions through the purchase of EVs and the retirement of high-emitting vehicles from the university fleet.

The incentives include $5,000 per EV, with a purchase commitment to Transportation Services in 2023-24, or a $2,000 incentive to retire an existing ICE vehicle in the fleet, with a commitment to not replace the vehicle within 12 months of sale (this incentive cannot be paired with the EV incentive above to replace a vehicle).

Departments and colleges can apply for up to three EV incentives and up to three vehicle retirement incentives during this fiscal year, and award distribution is at the discretion of Transportation Services and the President’s Sustainability commission on a first-come, first served basis.
