National Latinx Heritage Month is a time to celebrate community and connections. El Centro has a series of free events, speakers, and fundraisers planned to explore the intersectionality of the Latinx community in 2017. (Latinx is a gender-neutral term for those with cultural ties to Latin America.)

The kickoff event will be held at El Centro, on the main floor of the Lory Student Center, on Sept. 18, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The campus community is invited to celebrate with music, games and Mexican bread, and contribute to the canned food and school supplies drive for Laurel Elementary School.

Two national speakers will be on hand during the month. On Sept. 20, 6 p.m. YouTube and mitu personality Kat Lazo will appear in the Lory Student Center Theater; doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Then, on Oct. 5, at 5 p.m,  Jennicet Gutierrez, transgender activist who works to bring attention to the exclusion of LGBTQ individuals from the immigration debate, will speak in the LSC Theater; doors open at 4:30 p.m.
