CSU developing human capital management solution to replace current HR systems and processes

To meet the needs of a modern workforce dedicated to fulfilling Colorado State University’s academic, research and outreach missions, CSU has begun the process of acquiring a state-of-the-art human capital management system. Through a multi-campus approach, this cloud-based solution is being developed to address the evolving and diverse operational needs of CSU’s Fort Collins and Pueblo campuses.

“This initiative is a great example of bringing together our CSU System campuses to work on strategic priorities that have been identified and prioritized, by all,” said Brandon Bernier, vice president for information technology and chief information officer. “A new human capital management system will be a key component for organizational evolution as we look to new HR practices, processes and workflows aimed at investing in our people. A key part of the success of this initiative is active representation from across the CSU System in our project planning, governance and implementation teams.”

To this end, CSU in Fort Collins and CSU Pueblo will work together over the course of the next two years to replace the antiquated HR systems currently in use. In addition to presenting substantial business continuity and cybersecurity risks, these current systems are unable to keep pace with modern technology and operational and business needs and can no longer effectively serve the needs of CSU.

Another advantage of implementing a modern HCM system is the ability to minimize redundant systems and automate existing manual processes. This streamlined approach will empower the redirection of staff time and resources to focus more time and effort on students, research and fellow CSU colleagues.

“This multicampus-wide effort will help CSU create efficiencies in processes and ease of use that will be seen by our employees, leaders and prospective candidates,” said Eric Ray, vice president for human resources. “It will support our efforts to attract, retain and engage with top talent to serve our teaching, research, service and extension missions.”

The development of the new HCM is currently in the pre-implementation phase. The release of the request for proposal occurred in mid-December 2023, and the submission deadline was Feb. 15, covering both the HCM software and a project implementation partner. The subsequent steps involve the assessment of vendor proposals and the identification of vendor finalists. These finalists, along with their project implementation partners, will be invited to present software solution demonstrations to the campus community in the spring.
