Cannon test firing on Aug. 15 at Canvas Stadium

Colorado State University’s loudest tradition will get a dress rehearsal the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 15, in preparation for the upcoming football season.

Nicknamed “Comatose,” the 1918-era French 75mm Howitzer cannon helps the Rams take the field, punctuate the National Anthem, and celebrate scores each fall. Care of this tradition is given to CSU’s Army ROTC cadets.

Comatose is given its own corner of Canvas Stadium. It fires custom made shells filled with cardboard.

On Tuesday, as part of ROTC cadre certification for fall, the team will fire four to six firings from Comatose. The estimated time for these practice firings will be between 9-10 a.m. at Canvas Stadium.

Firing a cannon at football games has been a CSU tradition since the 1920s.
