2023 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report now available

Important safety information as well as university-related crime and fire statistics are reported annually by Colorado State University.

The 2023 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes statistics for the previous three years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campuses, in specific off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by Colorado State University, and on public property surrounding campuses.

“The ASFSR is a cross-university collaborative effort,” said Rebecca Miller, CSU’s Clery compliance program director, noting its purpose of sharing safety and security information at CSU.

Clery Act requirements

A landmark federal law adopted in 1990 and amended in 1998, now called section 485(f) of the Higher Education Act of 1965, requires institutions of higher education to disclose campus crime statistics and security information.

This report is published every fall and is required by the Clery Act to be distributed to all students and employees on or before Oct. 1 of each year.

Timely warnings and emergency alerts

CSU alerts members of the university community of significant emergencies or dangerous situations through the messaging system hosted by the Larimer Emergency Telephone Authority (LETA) that sends an email to every @colostate.edu address as well as a text message to the cell phone number connected to a student or employee.

LETA is the governing authority for 911 in Larimer County. CSU transitioned to using LETA for emergency notifications on July 1, 2023.

“LETA gives CSU and its community incredible support in helping us get notifications out regarding dangerous situations and during emergencies,” said Marc Barker, assistant vice president for safety and risk services and chief resilience officer. “The LETA system can cover everyone in Larimer County if needed. It gives our CSU safety personnel the ability to deliver messages specifically to our campus community and provides critical backup in case we ever need it.”

Barker was recently named to LETA’s Board of Directors and joins other leaders from Larimer County towns, cities, and fire and emergency health districts who meet bimonthly.

The Clery Act also requires CSU to test its emergency alert system throughout the year. CSU tests its systems twice a year, once typically in conjunction with the release of the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report.
