Fall 2024 cohort: Día de los Muertos experience

This program provides lifelong learners with an exceptional opportunity to immerse themselves in a rich cultural experience while honing their Spanish language skills. The course is intentionally crafted to be inclusive, welcoming participants with varying levels of language proficiency.

Additionally, students will have the chance to learn, understand and experience Día de los Muertos firsthand, celebrating with members of the local community.

The next cohort will take place this fall, beginning virtually on Oct. 8 and continuing in person from Oct. 28 to Nov. 7 in Todos Santos, Mexico. Registration opens July 1.

Spanish immersion

Under the guidance of Senior Language Coordinator Olaf Morales, participants will undergo an immersive journey consisting of six online sessions held via Zoom spanning three weeks. These sessions aim to lay a solid groundwork before embarking on a 10-night adventure in Todos Santos, situated just an hour north of Cabo San Lucas along the coastline of Baja California Sur, Mexico.

During their time in Todos Santos, participants will not only continue their language training but also actively engage in experiential learning opportunities. These include exploratory visits to local ranches, a mining town, and interactions with Ranchero families and members of the community.

These experiences, combined with the unique chance to delve into the traditions and significance of Día de los Muertos alongside local community members, makes for an incredibly memorable and impactful program.

While no specific prerequisites are mandatory, possessing some introductory Spanish skills or prior coursework can greatly enhance the experience.

“The integration of virtual learning with hands-on experiences caters to the needs of lifelong learners, allowing them to participate in a manner that aligns with their professional commitments,” she said.
