Course on sustainability offered April 10-11

The Institute for the Built Environment is cohosting an event with regeneration consultant Ben Haggard about regenerative development and the “Story of Place” on Tuesday, April 11, in Fort Collins and on Monday, April 10, in Denver.

The course “Reaching for Regeneration – Discovering the power of place” will be held at 6:15 p.m. in the Community Creative Center at the Carnegie Building, 200 Mathews St. in Fort Collins. The event in Denver will be held at 5:30 p.m. at The Alliance Center of Sustainable Colorado, 1536 Wynkoop St.

Regenerative development involves identifying and cultivating the unique characteristics of a community. It builds on sustainability by shifting the focus from reducing harm to generating benefit. In other words, you can give a man a fish or even teach a man to fish, but regenerative development might involve teaching him to love the ocean.

The events focus on a program called Story of Place, which examines a place’s historic and present ecology and culture to find a practical way to improve the potential of the place and its community. It is the understanding of the historical context that shapes the unique characteristics and drivers of a place, so that you can build on its foundation.

Haggard is a founding principal at Regenesis Group and is a lead faculty member in the delivery of educational programs to a network of regenerative practitioners worldwide. He will talk about regenerative development as a practice that focuses on the unique potential of a place and how to sustain it.

Admission to both events is free. Light refreshments will be served, and there will be a follow-up in-depth workshop about Story of Place in the autumn of 2017.
