It shouldn’t be a surprise if you are having a hard time fitting all the exciting and interesting events happening on campus into your schedule this month. As of April 1, nearly four dozen lectures, workshops, presentations, forums, performances, games, open houses, celebrations, commemorations, festivals, recognitions, special days, weeks and a whole month – not to mention pups on the plaza – have been scheduled.
April is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and the Asian/Pacific American Culture Center has a full roster of speakers and events. The Aspen Grille will be serving A Taste of Aloha lunch on April 6-7; reservations required, 491-7006.
National Public Health Week is April 3-8, and students from the School of Public Health will be hosting a number of events to highlight issues important to improving the health of our nation.
Administrative Professionals will be recognized at the annual luncheon on April 4.
Business Day is April 13 this year, featuring Cathy Morris, senior vice president and chief strategy officer of Arrow Electronics – and a CSU alumna. Her talk at 9 a.m. in the LSC Theatre is free to attend, but tickets are required. See all the presentations here.
E-Days focuses on everything Engineering April 13-15, with the highly anticipated Senior Design Showcase held on Friday, April 14.
The ACT Human Rights Film Festival returns for a second year April 14-21, presenting cinema around the issues of LGBTQ rights, human trafficking, the fight for democracy, disability rights, homeliness and more. Renowned actor and activist Harry Belafonte will be on hand for the closing night screening of I Am Not Your Negro, based on James Baldwin’s last unfinished manuscript. Tickets now on sale.
Mid-month gears up
The week of April 17-22 kicks the event machine into high gear. Earth Week, the celebration of everything green and sustainable on campus, launches Monday with Carpool to Coffee, which highlights ride sharing (with free coffee) and continues through Friday with the Earth Day Festival at Lory Student Center. CSUnity and the Fort Collins Earth Day celebration follow on Saturday.
In addition to celebrating sustainability, CSU students will have the chance to see and experience the incredible science and artistry that happens on campus every day – and win prizes – during Discovery Week, which kicks off at the Celebrate Undergraduate Research and Artistry Showcase April 17 in the LSC Ballroom and conclude at the CURC awards ceremony on April 25.
April 17 will also be the day when Rams Remember Rams with a candlelight ceremony on the steps of the Administration Building to honor members of the CSU community who have passed away in the last 12 months. Time will also be available for silent reflection at Danforth Chapel.
And, of course, I Love CSU Day on April 18 will be filled with a wide range of activities for all. The annual Celebrate! CSU Awards will be presented beginning at 3 p.m. in the LSC Ballroom, and the President’s Community Lecture featuring Dr. Wayne McIlwraith will be held in the LSC Theatre at 6:30 p.m.. And there may be a few surprises in store as well.
On Saturday, April 22, you can learn all about the services available at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital Open House in the morning, then drop by the annual Green and Gold Football Game, the conclusion of 2017 spring practice for the Rams, at the Lagoon Fields at 1 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.
What can you do on April 26? Learn how to become empowered, self-reliant and rich in every way with Nely Galan in the LSC Ballroom at 6 :30 p.m., celebrate the best teachers of 2017 at 5:30 p.m. in the LSC Theatre, or Take Back the Night on the Monfort Quad at 6 p.m. with the Women and Gender Advocacy Center to wrap up Sexual Assault Awareness month.
The month winds up on Saturday, April 29, with the Fast and the Furriest 5K Run/Walk around the Oval for dogs and their human companions And you’ll want to leave the pets at home when you attend a performance of Little Shop of Horrors at the University Center for the Arts, where it will play April 28-May 6.
Since we’re already into May, let’s not forget those employees honored for their service to CSU at the Celebrate! CSU Milestones event May 2.
Oh, and those pups on the plaza? They’ll be there on April 20, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m, provided by HABIC. Free ice cream, too.
