A series of talks will be held this fall in conjunction with the University Art Museum exhibition “SCRIMMAGE: Football in American Art from the Civil War to the Present.”
The exhibit is a survey of work by prominent American artists with subject matter examining the American sport of football from the 19th through the 21st centuries. It will be on display through Dec. 18.
Organized thematically, the artworks in this exhibition illuminate and reveal themes that continue from the earliest historical images to the present day. For example, current debates about violence and long-term health issues were questions debated and explored by artists as early as the 19th century. The exhibition examines these artworks through multiple interpretative formats – text, special programming events and an exhibition catalog – in order to involve a broad spectrum of visitors in this important discussion.
Over the next few months, the museum presents a series of “Sports Talk in the Art Museum” where in-depth discussions examine relevant topics relating to America’s favorite sport. The talks take place in the University Art Museum, located in the University Center for the Arts at 1400 Remington St. All programs are free and open to the public.
The “Sports Talk in the Museum” program is sponsored by the City of Fort Collins Fort Fund, the Lilla B. Morgan Memorial Fund and the FUNd Endowment at Colorado State University. This exhibition is organized by the University Art Museum at Colorado State University and the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon.

Thursday, Oct. 29, 4 p.m.
Join Dr. Nancy Jianakoplos, professor of economics, for a discussion of football economics, including controversies surrounding the status of collegiate players.
Talkin’ Success: Dr. Robert Gudmestad
Thursday, Nov. 12, 4 p.m.
Join Dr. Robert Gudmestad, associate professor of history, for a discussion of football’s success in supplanting baseball as America’s Game.
Talkin’ Back: Linny Frickman
Thursday, Dec. 3, 4 p.m.
In the last program in the series, join museum Director Linny Frickman for a discussion on the art museum as a site for a discussion of sports issues and cultural issues.
