Celebrating a decade

Horse enthusiasts will return to Fort Collins this April to continue a tradition that has become a hallmark of CSU’s Equine Science Program. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the CSU Legends of Ranching Performance Horse Sale will be held at the CSU Equine Center on Saturday, April 25.

The sale represents a culmination of a year-long program in which Equine Science students take two classes, gain real-world experience, and have the opportunity to help manage the sale. Approximately 45 students take part in the courses, which have come to be some of the most popular courses for both Animal and Equine Science students at CSU.

Well-known Quarter Horse ranches from around the country have consigned two- or three-year-old horses to the Horse Training and Sales Preparation class, as well as a number of aged performance horses to the horse sale.

Hands-on education

In addition to the 30 students involved in training the horses as part of the course, there are 15 students managing the horse sale through the Equine Sales Production course.

“What really matters in this sale is not what the horses bring, but what the students learn,” said Dr. Jerry Black, director of the Equine Science Program. “While everyone may talk of averages and high-sellers, the real value is in the hands-on education they experience.”

Sale April 25

The Legends of Ranching Performance Horse Sale will kick off on April 24 with the Consignors’ Mix ‘n Mingle, a dinner for consignors, sponsors, faculty and staff, as well as students enrolled in the above-mentioned courses. There will be a sale horse preview held at 9 am on the morning of Saturday, April 25 and the performance horse sale will begin at 1 pm.
