International conservationist Robin Reid, a professor in Colorado State University’s Department of Ecosystem Science and Sustainability, will be the featured speaker for the President’s Community Lecture Series Sept. 27.
The President’s Community Lecture Series, hosted by CSU President Tony Frank, presents free, public talks from outstanding Colorado State University faculty. The aim of the talks is to introduce CSU research, entrepreneurship and innovation to the Fort Collins community and beyond.
Reid, who also serves as director of the Center for Collaborative Conservation and is a co-founder of the Colorado Conservation Exchange, will give a talk titled, “Walking with Herders (and Others): Bringing Different People Together to Work with Nature,” 6:30-8 p.m., Sept. 27, at the Lory Student Center Theatre.
Registration is encouraged, as space is limited.
In her work over the years, Reid has found ways to bring together businesses, government, citizens and scientists to work out solutions for complicated conservation problems that benefit both people and nature. She has worked to transform how we do science, so it is more useful and accessible to the communities it is designed to serve.
Reid and her colleagues have worked with brewers in Colorado, walked the grasslands with Mongolian yak herders and tracked Serengeti wildebeest with Maasai cattle herders. In each case, Reid finds solutions are much longer lasting when her teams bring together science with indigenous and local knowledge.
The Department of Ecosystem Science and Sustainability is part of the Warner College of Natural Resources.
Former Gov. Bill Ritter, Jr., director of CSU’s Center for the New Energy Economy, is the featured speaker for the Nov. 7 President’s Community Lecture. In his talk, “Powering Forward: America’s Energy Revolution,” he will discuss the future of fossil and renewable fuels and the new ways our planet must think about energy.
Past President’s Community Lecture Series speakers have included: Professor of Animal Sciences Temple Grandin, University Distinguished Professors Stephen Withrow and Diana Wall, College of Agricultural Sciences Dean Ajay Menon, and professors Amy Prieto, Lori Peek and Bryan Willson.
