Minus the Plus — CSU’s online division shifts marketing strategy, maintains mission

At the beginning of July, CSU’s Division of Continuing Education will shift it’s public marketing strategy by changing the brand name of its online operations from Colorado State University OnlinePlus to Colorado State University Online.

CSU Online

Associate Provost for Instructional Innovation, Mike Palmquist, said though the change is small, it will help current and prospective students make a stronger connection between the division and the larger university. “Our sense is that the ‘Plus’ positioned us as an organization separate from the Fort Collins campus,” he said. “In contrast, Colorado State University Online sends a clearer message that our division’s purpose is to extend access for our online students to CSU’s on-campus programs, faculty, and resources.”

Palmquist explained that the official name of the division will remain the Division of Continuing Education. He said, “We are simply dropping the “Plus” from “OnlinePlus”—the name we use for external audiences. This change has been reviewed and endorsed by the Faculty Council Executive Committee.”

Although the division is dropping the “Plus” from its external name, it will continue to offer CSU’s classroom-based distance programs in addition to online programs. “Our mission remains the same, which is to provide access to exceptional online and distance education from a nationally recognized research university,” Palmquist said.
