Faculty honored by Grad Student Council for advising and mentorship

As a thick stack of nominations were reviewed by Graduate Student Council leadership a few weeks ago, comments such as “I never thought my life would be impacted by a mentor this much” spoke to the appreciation graduate students have for their advisors and mentors.
Each year, the GSC sponsors and selects faculty members for the Graduate Advising and Mentorship Award. The three 2016 awardees are:
- Asa Ben-Hur, Department of Computer Science
- Jason LaBelle, Department of Anthropology
- Courtney Schultz, Department of Forest and Rangeland Stewardship
In addition, five faculty members received honorable mentions:
- Patricia Davies, Department of Occupational Therapy
- Richard Finke, Department of Chemistry
- Chuck Henry, Department of Chemistry
- Courtney Jahn, Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management
- Rosa Martey, Department of Journalism and Technical Communication
The award celebrates exceptional faculty advisors who continually dedicate their time, energy, and wisdom to CSU graduate students. Faculty award recipients were honored at the Faculty Council Meeting in May.
One student nomination letter applauded Schultz stating, “She has spent an enormous amount of time and energy improving my writing skills, guiding me through the publication process, finding funding and projects that match my interests, and teaching me how to be an effective researcher, collaborator, and mentor in my own right.”
“The GSC’s recognition of exemplary faculty advisors is a wonderful example of the rewarding relationships graduate students enjoy with faculty in our programs. As the Dean of the Graduate School, I am delighted to congratulate these dedicated awardees for their commitment to graduate student advising, mentoring, and success,” said Jodie Hanzlik.
The GSC received more than 140 submissions, nearly double that of last year, nominating 95 faculty advisors. The GSC congratulates the award recipients and expresses gratitude to all faculty advisors dedicated to enriching the experience of graduate students at CSU.
