Deadline for Campus Connections student mentor applications extended

Campus Connections — a multidisciplinary service-learning course that involves mentoring at-risk youth referred through the juvenile justice system, schools and community agencies — is still seeking new student mentors and has extended its lineup of informational meetings into April.

The goal of Campus Connections is to strengthen youth life skills and self-confidence, and to promote the resilience and life success of at-risk youth. CSU students enrolled in Campus Connections (HDFS 470) are paired with a youth ages 11-18 years and provide one-on-one mentoring for 12 weeks. Campus Connections is offered on campus on four different nights (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday). Students who participate will choose one of the four sections (i.e., one of those nights) to register for and attend lab.

Campus Connections is a unique program because it has the structure and therapeutic staff to address mental health and behavioral issues of youths, beyond the scope of traditional mentoring programs. Throughout the semester, CSU students spend the four hours providing both individual and group mentoring. To prepare for and debrief the evening, CSU students arrive to lab one hour before the youth arrive and stay one hour after the youth leave. Youth participants attend lab one evening per week for four hours to receive support towards academic success and future-oriented goals, explore CSU’s campus, eat dinner and participate in social activities with their CSU mentor and other youth participants.

Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled, and can be dropped off in the Gifford Building, room 142. Please note that enrollment in the course is limited and applications will be processed in the order they are received.
