The 49th CSU Archaeology Field School provided a rich learning experience for both students and members of the public.
The unique program, which offers a chance for members of the general public to observe students working an active dig site, has been part of CSU’s Department of Anthropology for nearly half a century. Jason LaBelle, associate professor of archaeology, oversees the dig near Fossil Creek in southeast Fort Collins.
Hands-on experience
Participants meticulously scraped and sifted their way through layer after layer of dirt, hoping to find artifacts left behind by Native Americans over the past 1,200 years. The site has yielded numerous finds, including arrow points and ceramic fragments.
Once analyzed, artifacts are stored at CSU’s archaeology repository.
