Take a Winchester Holiday at the lagoon

winchester-holidayWinchester Holiday appears for the first time in the Lagoon Summer Concert Series Wednesday, July 8. The music starts at 6:30 p.m.

Winchester Holiday evokes ’60s folk music with a new wave rock edge — Woody Guthrie meets Belle & Sebastian.

Winchester Holiday is made up of two sets of brothers from Fort Collins with an adopted sibling, Adam Federer from South Carolina, on drums. The Cecil brothers, Noah (guitar/vocals) and Wilson (accordion/keys/vocals), along with Dan (lead guitar/vocals) and Pete (bass / vocals) Workman have been playing music since they attended Lincoln Middle School together.

Since then, they have been throwing Frisbees on the same lawn on Wednesday nights through Colorado State’s summer recreation department.

“We pretty much play rock’n’roll with some folk and a lot of singing,” Dan Workman says. “The four brothers sing, and we’re all best friends,” Workman says laughing.

Before meeting Federer in a friend’s basement, the brothers were basically amateur musicians who just enjoyed each other’s friendship. When they heard Federer’s drum playing, they knew he was the key to forming something official.

Two years ago, SpokesBUZZ brought Winchester Holiday to SXSW in Austin to highlight Colorado’s up and coming music scene. Since then, SpokesBUZZ and the Fort Collins musical community have guided and helped the band hone their unique indie-rock sound.

Polaris Modern Band, part of Little Kids Rock, will open the show at 6:15 p.m. Little Kids Rock is a national nonprofit helping kids find their inner music makers, sponsored locally by the Bohemian Foundation.

In addition to music, Lagoon Concert attendees will be able to enjoy a number of specialty foods from trucks including America’s Variety Cart, Nomad Street Cuisine and Ba-Nom-A-Nom. The public is encouraged to bring chairs and blankets for an enjoyable evening on CSU’s grassy lawn.
