Gift supports expanded nutrition outreach, programming in new Health and Medical Center

The Colorado State University Kendall Reagan Nutrition Center[2] will be providing nutrition and outreach programming to the campus and community in an expanded space thanks to a transformational gift from longtime supporters Pat and Larry Kendall.  The gift supports the opening of a new satellite office in the Health and Medical Center[3] at Colorado State in July 2017.

Pat Kendall, professor emerita in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition and a 1983 Ph.D. graduate, spent her career at CSU educating students and the northern Colorado community about the importance of nutrition to overall wellness.

Kendall Reagan Nutrition Center satellite office

“When we learned about the development of the new Health and Medical Center, we were excited to support the creation of a satellite office for the Nutrition Center that would enhance community connections,” Pat Kendall said of their decision to invest in the space.

The new satellite space will house two offices for professional dietitians and a multi-use room for students and interns to prepare materials, classes and outreach programs.

Located along the MAX bus route on the corner of Prospect and College, the Health and Medical Center houses the CSU Health Network for students, as well as partners who will provide medical services to faculty and staff and the community. Community members will have access to the Kendall Reagan Nutrition Center’s services at this more convenient location. The KRNC will also continue to operate at its current site in the Gifford Building.

The KRNC was established by the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition to teach and train the region’s food and nutrition experts through real-world interactions with clients. Thanks to the KRNC, nutrition alumni are joining the workforce with hands-on experience translating the science of nutrition into practical solutions for healthy living. Providing consistent and cutting-edge nutrition education and counseling can significantly improve health and quality of life throughout the lifespan.

At the Health and Medical Center, the Kendall Reagan Nutrition Center occupies a prominent first-floor location, where it shares space and will partner with CSU’s Columbine Health Systems Center for Healthy Aging. The impressive new facility will provide a collaborative space to bring medical professionals, researchers and registered dietitians together to work toward finding innovative solutions for improving health.

Building partners, including UCHealth, CSU Health Network, Associates in Family Medicine and Poudre Infusion Therapy (part of Columbine Health Systems), will connect CSU students, faculty and staff, as well as community members, with the Kendall Reagan Nutrition Center in support of convenient, holistic care.

“I believe that the collaboration will end up making a big difference in a lot of people’s lives,” said Larry Kendall.

“I am immensely grateful for Pat and Larry’s continued support of our nutrition outreach center. Because of their generosity, we are able to educate more students and reach more clients,” said Melissa Wdowik, director of the Kendall Reagan Nutrition Center.

“It is a legacy for me,” said Pat Kendall. “It’s something I’ve done all my life.”

Pat Kendall was honored as part of the Legacies Project[6], chronicling the personal and professional stories of College of Health and Human Sciences faculty emeriti and retirees.

The Kendalls were featured in the College of Health and Human Sciences Homecoming video[7] about the CSU Health and Medical Center in October 2016, where they shared their philanthropic philosophy: “Live simple. Think big. Make a difference.”

In addition to the Kendalls, the Kendall Reagan Nutrition Center is also named for and supported by Danette and Monty Reagan. Danette, a dietitian and nutrition educator, is also a CSU alumna and longtime supporter.

On Saturday, July 29, 3–5 p.m., the public is invited to a Community Open House event, which will include tours of the new Health and Medical Center and the services available to the public, including the KRNC. Read more about the Health and Medical Center[3].
