Getting REAL: Workshop series teaches students leadership skills

A program called The REAL (Rams Engaging in Activity Leadership) Experience is hosting leadership workshops every Monday and Thursday this fall.

REAL, presented by SliCE (Student Leadership, Involvement, and Community Engagement) consists of 11 core workshops that are offered twice a semester, on a Monday at 5 p.m. and on a Thursday at 4 p.m. The full schedule is available online. The workshops are aligned with eight leadership competencies: unnamed

  • Community Engagement
  • Ethics
  • Intellectual Development
  • Interpersonal Competence
  • Intrapersonal Development
  • Leadership
  • Multicultural
  • Practical Competence

The program provides all CSU students with the opportunity to develop and enhance their own way of leadership that includes an understanding of self, groups and their community.

“The REAL Experience helps to further develop leadership skills in a variety of engaging workshops to invite students to think about how they constantly impact their surroundings by increasing self-awareness,” said Carina Orozco, REAL’s workshop coordinator.

Each workshop focuses on different key topics such as giving and receiving feedback, leading through conflict and multicultural competence.

There is also an opportunity for students to earn a Leadership Preparation Certification by completing all core workshops and two leadership coaching meetings designed to complement the workshops.
