The dawn of a new community: Aggie Village Open House

Amid the bustle of building activity at Colorado State University, a multipurpose jewel has emerged between Prospect Road and Lake Street. Aggie Village opened in August 2016 as the largest housing development ever built on campus.
You can experience our newest community firsthand at the Aggie Village Open House, Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2– 4 p.m. Tours of the complex will include community spaces, a model apartment and the new classroom spaces, and refreshments will be served.
Managed by CSU’s Apartment Life in Housing & Dining Services[1], Aggie Village has 973 beds and replaces the former Aggie Village North, which had 290 beds. Aggie Village South has been renamed Aggie Village Family, catering to students with families who wish to live on campus. Kitchen and wi-fi upgrades are on the horizon for these units.
Originally built in the early 1960s, Aggie Village has seen only modest renovations over the years, until the three new buildings were built on the north side of Prospect. Aggie Village houses a mix of upperclass undergraduate and graduate students, visiting scholars, and post-doctoral fellows.
About 75 percent of the beds are currently devoted to undergraduates, some of whom are Intercultural Connections Community (ICC) students interested in studying abroad or pursuing careers in international fields. “Aggie Village houses more traditional-aged students than some of our other apartment communities, and has more than doubled our inventory,” according to Apartment Life’s Louie Sanchez.

Three building complex
The three Aggie Village buildings provide a lot of bang for the buck, and rival the nicest and newest of the off-campus competition. In addition to the individual apartments that range from studios to four-bedroom units, each building has welcoming common areas including lounges, community kitchens, and game areas with pool, ping pong, and foosball. One building also houses classroom space and campus offices.
Great infrastructure aside, one of the best aspects of Aggie Village is that it continues to foster the CSU on-campus tradition of outstanding community development programming.
“In Aggie Village we are still in the development mode for establishing programming expectations for our unique community,” said Hosam Ahmad, assistant director of Apartment Life. “As a start, we are trying to do programs that meet the four values of Aggie Village: Civility, Academic Success, Community, and Interculturalism.”
Programming so far has included community building and social gatherings that focus on a wide range of topics such as sustainability, wellness, sports, and activities such as book clubs, conversational language classes, cooking demonstrations, and opportunities for student engagement in leadership. “We are trying to promote independence and encourage friendship among our residents (roommates) by creating a sense of community and connection,” Ahmad adds. “Our community spaces provide a great location to implement these ideas.”
