CSU brings home two national interior design awards

Colorado State University brought home awards and national recognition from the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) this summer. The ASID Student Chapter at CSU won Outstanding Student Chapter of the Year, and the club’s advisor, Stephanie Clemons, won Faculty Advisor of the Year.

According to ASID, CSU’s student chapter was recognized for its exceptional service to its student members, professional associates and community.

Throughout the year, the CSU chapter puts on numerous events and networking opportunities for their members. It offers workshops to develop leadership skills, and sends out scholarship and internship notices. The club is also active in the community, helping out with events such as CSU’s Fall Clean Up, CSU Unity and Operation Christmas Child.

“We keep all members in the know about upcoming professional ASID events, chances at awards and scholarships, and opportunities to network,” said incoming chapter president Samantha Ward. “We try to have two to three events per month so that students feel like they’re getting the most out of their membership dues.”

Briar Sawkins, outgoing chapter president, attended the conference in Boston and accepted the award on the chapter’s behalf. While she was there, she met other student award winners, some of the ASID founders, and even had dinner with the ASID Colorado board members.

“It’s exciting to be part of something that is so much bigger than myself or the student chapter at CSU,” Sawkins said. “A large event like this puts into perspective the impact ASID has on the industry with so many people supporting it.”

In addition to the two awards, the event also brought national recognition to CSU.

“It boggles my mind that other chapters across the nation know who we are and what we’ve done,” Ward said. “I think it reflects what CSU is capable of and really puts us on the map as a chapter and an interior design program.”

The interior design program, part of the Department of Design and Merchandising at CSU, provides students with broad exposure to aspects of interior design at an entry level. The program is grounded in research-based problem solving in addition to a variety of cultural, environmental and historic perspectives. Students also have an opportunity to continue their education with the master’s program.

Clemons, a professor in the interior design program, was selected as Faculty Advisor of the Year from ASID. According to ASID, the award goes to an exceptional and innovative educator that has provided their ASID student chapter with inspiration and guidance.

“Stephanie has always been there for us as a chapter, offering advice, ideas and connections with other designers,” Ward said. “She’s a reliable advisor who has helped us grow, not just as a chapter, but also individually.”

CSU’s ASID student chapter and Clemons were recognized at the national ASID Industry Awards Gala in Boston in July.

The Department of Design and Merchandising is in the College of Health and Human Sciences at CSU.
