Co-Founder of Malala Fund to speak March 9

ShizaShahidEntrepreneur and social activist Shiza Shahid, co-founder and global ambassador of the Malala Fund, will speak at Colorado State University on Monday, March 9, 6 p.m., in the Main Ballroom of the Lory Student Center.

The Malala Fund is the organization representing Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai, the young Pakistani activist who was shot by the Taliban for her campaign for girls’ education. The aim of the fund is to educate every one of the more than 600 million adolescent girls around the world who are denied a formal education because of social, economic, legal and political factors.

Shiza Shahid’s appearance is presented by the Office of International Programs and the Ripple Effect, with support from the Colorado School of Public Health at CSU, the Global Social and Sustainable Enterprise MBA program, SLiCE (Student, Leadership, Involvement and Community Engagement), GO Abroad, Women and Gender Advocacy Center, First National Bank, and KUNC radio.

Shahid will be on campus in recognition of International Women’s Day on March 8.

A graduate of Stanford University, Shahid, 25, was previously a business analyst at McKinsey & Company in the Middle East and is now leading the Malala Fund in its work to empower girls through education. She was recently named one of TIME magazine’s “30 Under 30 World Changers” and to Forbes’ “30 Under 30″ list of social entrepreneurs.

“Education empowers girls to raise their voices, to unlock their potential, and to demand change,” Shahid says. “The Malala Fund’s solutions are grounded in inspired innovation: they are girl-centric approaches to education that support the Fund’s goal of creating a world where every girl reaches her true potential.”

Shiza Shahid’s talk is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. Tickets are available at the Lory Student Center box office and online at csutix.com.
