by CSU MarComm Staff | April 13, 2017 2:58 PM

The Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program at CSU will present an interdisciplinary symposium on “Borders and Borderlands: Culture, Society, and Economics during Changing Times” on Thursday, April 20, in the Morgan Library Event Hall.

The events are free and open to the public, and no registration is required. Sessions start at 9 a.m. [1]

The program features panels by faculty researchers on historical and current barriers and borders — drawing from Colorado, U.S., and global perspectives — and undergraduate student poster presentations on border-related research throughout the day.

Highlights

Highlights of the day include:

  • “Facilitating Discussion of Emotionally Charged Issues,” a community workshop at 10:30 a.m. led by Carmen Mendoza of Connections Heart Centered Coaching in Fort Collins
  • “Violent Intimacies at the Mexico-U.S. Border Industrial Complex,” a featured lunch hour presentation at noon by Cristina Jo Pérez of the University of California, Davis
  • “U.S.-Mexico Border Issues and Policies: An Economic Prospective,” a keynote address at 3 p.m. by Dr. Joan B. Anderson of the University of San Diego

The symposium concludes with a screening (a ticketed event) of the film Walls/Muros as part of the second annual ACT Human Rights Film Festival and a panel discussion following the film with Alvaro Enciso, an artist and cultural anthropologist who investigates migrant deaths, and Hanan Isweiri, a CSU Ph.D. student who was stranded by President Donald Trump’s first travel ban. The film will be shown in the Lory Student Center Theatre.
