February is Black History Month, and the Black/African American Cultural Center at Colorado State University has an entire lineup of events planned.

“This year is also the 40th anniversary of B/AACC, formerly known as Black Student Services, and we are pleased to recognize and celebrate all those who have worked for student inclusion on campus for so long,” said Bridgette Johnson, director of B/AACC.

That local history will be a significant part of the kickoff to the month, Feb. 1, at 4 p.m. in the Lory Student Center Ballroom B. The event will feature visual art, dance, singing and spoken-word performances, as well as remarks by Vivian Kerr, the first director of B/AACC, and Meredith Levert, the first president of Black Student Services and founder of Project Go.

Full range of events

Author Ibram X. Kendi, assistant professor of African American History at the University of Florida, will be on campus Feb. 7 to discuss his book, #STAMPED from the Beginning, a history of racist ideas in America. His talk begins at 6 p.m. in the Grey Rock Room of the Lory Student Center.

On Feb. 10 at 7 p.m., comedian Nate Jackson, who has appeared on MTV’s Wild’n Out and other TV shows, will serve up the laughs in the LSC North Ballroom.

Soul Food Lunch will be on the menu at the Aspen Grille in the LSC on Feb. 16-17 – reservations required, 491-7006.

The Black History Quiz Bowl on Feb. 24 at noon in the B/AACC space at LSC 335, features a half-dozen campus organizations in a Jeopardy!-style competition for bragging rights and a pizza party. Then at 7 p.m., it’s Old School Funk Night in the LSC Ballroom A, with DJ Kent Washington – dress to impress!

Other events throughout the month include additional speakers, films, interactive discussions, a hair fashion show, rap/hip-hop battles and more. Full schedule available at baacc.colostate.edu[1].
